SOVA Small Business Pitch Competition: Bring Your Business Idea to Life

Have a great business idea but aren't sure where to start

The SOVA Small Business Pitch Competition is looking for aspiring entrepreneurs who are ready to transform their ideas into successful businesses that will strengthen our local communities.

Whether your concept is in retail, skilled trades, professional services, or a new product or invention, this competition provides more than just the chance to win prize money. Participants will gain access to entrepreneurship education, one-on-one mentorship from experienced business leaders, business plan development assistance, and valuable networking opportunities designed to help turn ideas into reality.

Who Can Apply

  • Individuals or teams who have never started, owned, or operated a business
  • Entrepreneurs whose business has been operating for fewer than 18 months
  • Applicants who are at least 16 years old
  • Businesses in the idea, startup, or early-growth stage
  • Eligible Locations

Proposed businesses must be located and launched in:

  • Chesterfield County
  • Chester
  • Matoaca
  • Petersburg
  • Colonial Heights
  • Hopewell
  • Dinwiddie County
  • Prince George County

Application Requirements

Each applicant must submit a concise 1-2 page business plan summary that includes:

  • Business name and mission or purpose
  • Proposed business location, including whether the business will operate online, in a specific city, or at a physical address
  • The problem, need, or market opportunity the business will address
  • The proposed product or service solution
  • Target customers and key competitors
  • Revenue model and basic financial projections (if available; not required)

Application Fee: There is no cost to apply or participate in the competition.

Prizes: First place will receive $2,500, second place $1,000, and third place $500. Every applicant will also receive business mentorship from local business owners, business online training from Longwood University and free Chamber of Commerce membership for 1 year.

Non-Monetary Prizes: All applicants will be recognized in Chamber publications and social media and will have networking opportunities with local business leaders. Your business will be highlighted in the SOVA Chamber of Commerce Newsletter.
